Hearing Aids
A hearing aid is a medical device prescribed for individuals with varying degrees of hearing loss. There are two broad categories of hearing aids based on technology: analog and digital. Digital hearing aids are programmable and can be customized to the individual’s hearing loss. They come in battery-operated or rechargeable options, with prices ranging from 18,000 to 4 lakh rupees per hearing aid. Digital hearing aids offer maximum comfort to the wearer, avoiding unnecessary discomfort associated with improper amplification. These devices can be further categorized as basic, essential, standard, advanced, and premium based on their technological features.
On the other hand, analog hearing aids amplify sounds regardless of the patient’s specific hearing loss, and they are generally ranging from 3000 to 18000 per device. However, the use of analog devices may lead to discomfort due to improper amplification, potentially causing a decline in residual hearing.
Based on Style/Form factor:
- Receiver in the canal (RIC): Small hearing aid fits behind the ear with the receiver of the aid in the canal
- Behind the ear (BTE): The hearing aid sits behind the ear and is connected to the ear mould that fits into the ear canal. They are suitable for all degrees of hearing loss.
- Custom Hearing Aids (CIC/ITE/ITC): Suitable for mild to severe hearing loss with rechargeable and battery-operated technology. These are customized shells that fits inside the ear.
